We as people want to achieve better, but are mostly trapped in our own minds & environments. Things don’t go our way and we complain. Or if something major occurs, that person or idea should be banished forever. People don’t see the long hours a person dedicates to his craft and the sacrifices that are made. They don’t know the person’s journey from living in poverty to becoming successful at their career.
All that is shown is the person’s current life at the moment and the luxuries that come with it. The media misrepresents the world in many ways. You are shown a image of a Basketball player and all of the jewelry, cars that person has.
But, what isn’t shown is the person living in poverty, not knowing if food is going to last, if they are going to be evicted from their apartment, etc. You are shown a photo of a singer and see the high life of jets, cars, money, etc. But, what isn’t shown is that the singer is dealing with cancer and only has 5 months to live. These are the things to think about the next time you see an athlete, singer, actor, comedian, and believe they are living a great life. They are, but they are human and also have issues too.
Making to the professional level in basketball is very difficult and takes an abundance of hard work, luck, dedication, sacrifice, skill, training, etc. When someone says that women basketball players aren’t and will never be good as men, it is downright disrespectful because you don’t know how much time they put into their craft.
This may be surprising to many, but NBA Players and hoopers who actually can play ball respect women players. This is facts, just go ask any NBA player or person who can really hoop and they would tell you what I am saying. The people who can’t hoop, never played high school ball, college ball, the average working man who is tired of his job and wants to vent and uses women ballplayers as amusement for his issues.
Let me make it clear, it is HARD to make it in the WNBA. These are the top 1% of basketball players in the world! You don’t get to the highest level in basketball by just being a woman. That statement is wrong and shouldn’t be said at all.
All REAL ballplayers know the standard and the work that needs to be done. People who also say the women’s game is boring, you haven’t really watched basketball. you just want to see the highlights. Try going to an actual game first. I have been watching basketball for a long time and love watching the WNBA and their players.
This past year’s playoffs were insane with the buzzer beaters, half-court shots. I remember watching the Chicago Sky vs the Las Vegas Aces and saw Dearica Hamby shoot the ball from half court and make it for the win!!!!!!! it was something to behold and will live on in basketball history. Not to mention, They were in the semi-finals and needed to win to stay alive and extend the series.
Shout to the Washington Mystics for winning their first championship in franchise history!
Lastly, WNBA players are doing something majority of people won’t do: Go Professional in sports.
This is very true! It applies to all areas of life. We are sometimes judgmental without even realizing it because the media makes it seem OK.

I live in the UK and basketball isn’t as popular over here, so this was a really interesting read as i’m not used to hearing about the sport! Great post! 🙂

The WNBA is criminally underrated! I really got into it a couple years ago after watching the women’s NCAA tournament and getting attached to some of the players and wanting to follow them into the pros. I’m a Phoenix Mercury fan.

I agree with this post! Women in sports, not only in Basketball, are so undervalued unfortunately. They are talented, beautiful and smart, so I look forward to a day when they’re equally respected. Great post! – https://angiewaves.com/

Over in the UK we get riled over how much our footballers are paid, which I guess is a similar thing? Thank you, it’s worth remembering how hard professional sportspeople have to work to get to where they are.

Very true! Hopefully the stigma about the WNBA gets better as the years pass.

Thank you for this post! The WNBA is under-appreciated and people take professional athletes for granted. We probably underestimate how much dedication, time, and passion it takes for anyone, let alone women, to make it in professional sports.

Nice piece, I think that you’re right it is harder to make it in the WNBA then it is to make it in the NBA. Women just play the game differently, they play it much smarter in my opinion.

This is actually very interesting. Everyone has their own struggles and life isn’t easy. We have to appreciate everything that we have and be thankful.
Basketball isn’t the most popular here but it was fun reading this. It gave another perspective.

This post is actually true. I don’t know much about NBWA but women playing sports in general are not appreciated. They are talented and deserve much better. The media has just become a source to trouble people now a days. Thank you for sharing this post!

I’m in the UK so basketball isn’t really a thing here, which made this a really informative read. But I think this can be applied to women in several sports. It’s important to remember how much effort it takes for athletes to get where they are x

I will never understand how some people respect male athletes to the extreme but fail to show the same level of respect for their female counterparts. These women train HARD to become the best of the best in their sport. They aren’t handed their position, they work for it. They earn it.

Well said. We have no idea what is going on behind the scenes. Athletes put in long hours/hard work and that should be respected regardless of gender.
